Future Volunteer – Lasting Connections

“Volunteering with Ausome is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Ausome programs have the magical ability to transform lives. Including ours.” – Cassandra

Cassandra and Devan met at an Ausome Waterpolo program in 2016. Since then, they have married and recently welcomed their first child, Leo. Congratulations, Cassandra and Devan!

Former volunteer and staff member Cassandra and Ausome Community Engagement Coordinator Cameron caught up on all of Cassandra’s tips and tricks on how to make the most out of your volunteer experience with Ausome.

How did both of you become volunteers with Ausome?

Devan and I both became involved with Ausome through Ausome’s Director of Training, Anna Whyte. Devan went to high school with her, and I worked with her. As a result, we both  started volunteering for many different programs – from soccer to running club to summer camp!

Then, as Ausome grew more and more, I became a Program Director for one of their fitness programs. It was amazing to watch how much the kids improved over the eight weeks and see the bonds they created with their volunteer buddy.

Describe your experience with Ausome?

It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done, and it helped solidify my career path. The energy that the staff and kids bring to each program is contagious, and you can’t help but leave with a massive smile on your face. Ausome programs have the magical ability to transform lives, including ours.

Devan and I met in 2016, volunteering at an Ausome Waterpolo program and have been together ever since! In October 2019, we got married, and we just had our first child in December 2020 – a future Ausome volunteer!

What would be your advice to new volunteers with Ausome?

My best piece of advice to new volunteers would be to bring the energy! These kids have a lot of it, and they love having personal cheerleaders. Finally, consider making it a family affair!

Thank you, Cassandra and Devan, for your continued support of Ausome!

P.S. Has Ausome enriched your life? We’d love to hear from you. Please email Cameron@AusomeOttawa.com to share your story!
